Where’s the Fun?

In a world where people are buried face-first in their devices, it’s no wonder when we try to find things to do it isn’t always easy. Everything we like to do is right there in our hand, and many of us have no motivation to get up and get out!

What does this do to our human, instinctive way to socialize? I miss the days where people would all be experiencing the same thing at the same time. Nobody would be looking at a screen for any reason. There might be 1 or 2 people with a camcorder, but not a screen. At an event everyone would be connecting through socialization with each other, in person, face to face, even strangers! Can you imagine?!

Meeting people was organic. In order to see your friends you had to leave the house. If you didn’t leave your house it was because you were sick, injured, or something was wrong. “Just a phone call away” meant something different back then. It meant when you were at home you were just a phone call away, but if you were out then they could leave you a message on your answering machine, or you could make a call on a pay phone. You needed coins to make a call, or call collect.

I could go on and on about the good old days, but it won’t change the current days.

Today’s world moves fast. Everything we do is in our pocket. A phone has become a part of our being. Part of who we are. It helps us with everything we do. However, it does not help us experience the natural world how we were meant to experience it. Where’s the fun in that?

This summer if you are looking for something to do, call your friends and family. Invite them over to watch a movie, take a bike ride, swim, BBQ, find a hiking trail and explore, or just hang out this summer. Put the phones down and break out a board game. Go outside and play tag, hide-and-seek, jump rope, or sidewalk chalk. Not only is it fun, it also builds your relationships. Encouraging your child to be creative, to be physically and mentally active, and to communicate with others also shows them that there is a REAL world on this side of the screen that is FUN and interesting. They just need to look up.

Memories made together will last a lifetime. Have a fun and safe summer!
